What does this llms.txt generator do?
It builds an llms.txt file from a simple form and checks an existing file against the published format. An llms.txt file is a Markdown file at the root of your site that gives AI tools a short summary of the site and a curated list of the pages worth reading. The format was proposed by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI on 3 September 2024 and is documented at llmstxt.org. It is a proposal, not a ratified web standard.
How do you use the generator?
- Enter your site or project name. This becomes the H1 title, the only required part of the file.
- Write a one or two sentence summary. It is placed in a blockquote under the title.
- Add optional details: short paragraphs or bullet points that explain what the site is and how to read the links. No headings here.
- Add sections such as “Services”, “Products” or “Docs”. In each section, add links with a name, a full URL and an optional note.
- Put lower-priority links in the “Optional” section.
- Copy or download the file and upload it so it loads at
https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt.
To check a file you already have, paste it into the validator tab. It reports errors (the file breaks the format) and warnings (the file works but could be clearer).
What is the exact llms.txt format?
The specification lists these parts in this order:
| Part | Markdown | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Title | # Site name (H1) | Yes, the only required part |
| Summary | > One or two sentences (blockquote) | No, but recommended |
| Details | Paragraphs or lists, no headings | No |
| File list sections | ## Section name (H2) followed by a list | No, zero or more |
| List item | - [Name](https://url): optional note | The link is required, the note is optional |
| Optional section | ## Optional | No. Links here can be skipped when a shorter context is needed |

Where does the file go and what about llms-full.txt?
The specification places the file at /llms.txt, though it may also sit at a subpath, in which case it covers URLs under that path. The specification also suggests offering clean Markdown copies of pages at the same URL with .md added, for example /about/index.html.md (or index.md).
llms-full.txt is a common convention where a site puts the full text of its key pages into one file. It is not part of the llmstxt.org specification. The original proposal described generated context files named llms-ctx.txt and llms-ctx-full.txt instead. Many documentation platforms publish an llms-full.txt anyway, so it is fine to add one, but treat it as optional.
Does llms.txt help you rank in Google or AI answers?
Not directly. Google states on its AI features and your website page that there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and that you do not need to create new machine readable files or AI text files to appear in those features. Normal SEO practice still applies: crawlable pages, useful content and correct technical setup. We found no public statement from OpenAI, Google or Anthropic that their crawlers read llms.txt. Tools that support the format can still use it when a user points them at a site.
So llms.txt is cheap insurance rather than a ranking factor. It takes ten minutes to make, it helps any tool that does read it, and it forces you to decide which pages matter most. For what actually moves AI visibility, see our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT.
Common mistakes
- No H1 or the H1 is not first. The title must be the first heading in the file.
- Using H3 headings or deeper. The format only defines one H1 and H2 sections. Extra heading levels may confuse simple parsers.
- Links without the bracket format. A bare URL on a list line is not a valid file list item. Use
[name](url). - Relative URLs. The format does not forbid them, but full
https://URLs work everywhere the file is read. - Listing every page. The point is curation. Pick the 10 to 40 pages that explain your business best.
- Blocking it in robots.txt. If your robots.txt disallows the root or
/llms.txt, crawlers that respect robots.txt will not fetch it.
Tips for WordPress sites
- Upload the file to the web root (usually the same folder as
wp-config.php) with your host file manager or FTP. A physical file is served before WordPress loads. - Yoast SEO and AIOSEO can generate an llms.txt for you. If you use one, do not also upload a manual file, or check which one the server actually serves.
- Make sure the file is served as plain text in UTF-8 so Urdu, Arabic or accented names display correctly.
- Update it when you add a service or product. Our website development and SEO and AI search optimization services include llms.txt setup.
