Allowances change with fare and route. Your e-ticket or booking shows the exact allowance; it always wins over this calculator.

To check your baggage, enter the weight of each bag and your ticket allowance. The calculator converts between kilograms and pounds (1 kg = 2.20462 lb), tells you whether you are within your allowance, flags any bag over the per-bag, 32 kg or size limit, and shows how many kilograms you need to move or pay for. Your ticket or booking is always the final word on your allowance.

How to use this tool

  1. Pick your airline, route, cabin class and fare. For Emirates and Qatar Airways the tool fills in the allowance. For PIA or another airline, pick the allowance type shown on your ticket: piece (for example 2PC or 2 x 23 kg) or weight (for example 30K or 30 kg).
  2. Check the allowance, or enter it from your ticket. For piece tickets enter the number of bags and the weight per bag.
  3. Weigh each bag at home with a luggage scale and enter the weights in kg or lb.
  4. Read the result: the verdict shows whether you are within your allowance, with the total weight and what is left. Any bag over the per-bag limit, the 32 kg limit or the size limit is listed with the amount over.

What is the difference between the piece and weight concept?

Under the weight concept you get a total weight and can split it across as many bags as you like, as long as no single bag is over 32 kg. Under the piece concept you get a number of bags and each bag has its own weight limit, usually 23 kg in economy and 32 kg in business and first. Emirates and Qatar Airways use the piece concept for flights to and from the Americas and Africa and the weight concept on most other routes.

How do I convert kg to lb?

One pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, so 1 kg is 2.20462 lb.

lb = kg x 2.20462
kg = lb x 0.45359237
23 kg = 50.7 lb
32 kg = 70.5 lb
7 kg  = 15.4 lb

Airlines round these in their own tables (23 kg is shown as 50 lb, 32 kg as 70 lb), so if your bag is right on the limit, use the kilogram figure printed on your ticket.

Worked example

You fly economy on a 30 kg weight ticket with three bags of 14 kg, 11 kg and 7.5 kg. The total is 32.5 kg, which is 2.5 kg over. Each bag is under 32 kg, so moving 2.5 kg into your 7 kg cabin bag (if it has room) or paying for excess fixes it. On a 2 x 23 kg piece ticket the same packing would fail differently: three bags is one piece too many, even though each bag is under 23 kg.

Common mistakes

  • Adding pieces together on a piece ticket. Two bags of 30 kg and 16 kg total 46 kg, the same as 2 x 23 kg, but the 30 kg bag is still overweight.
  • Ignoring the 32 kg cap. Emirates and Qatar Airways do not accept a single checked bag over 32 kg, even if your total allowance is 40 kg or more.
  • Forgetting size limits. Emirates allows 203 cm total (length + width + height) per bag on weight routes and 150 cm on piece routes; Qatar Airways allows 300 cm and 158 cm; PIA lists 158 cm.
  • Using a bathroom scale. They are not made for bags and can be hard to read. A hanging luggage scale is more reliable.
  • Assuming the connecting airline uses the same rules. On tickets with more than one airline the allowance can differ from what one airline publishes. Check the booking.

Tips for Umrah and Hajj travellers

  • Weigh bags again before the return flight, since gifts and dates add weight quickly.
  • Pack heavy items in the middle bag so you can move weight quickly at the counter.
  • Write your passport number on a tag inside each bag.

Travel agencies can store each group’s baggage allowance with the booking in Safar Studio, and our article on travel agency software in Pakistan explains what to look for.
