To convert CGPA to percentage in Pakistan, use the HEC formula: find the band your CGPA falls in, subtract that band’s number from your CGPA and divide by the band’s factor. A CGPA of 3.5 on the 4.0 scale is (3.5 – 0.29) / 0.037 = 86.8%, and 3.0 is (3.0 – 0.36) / 0.036 = 73.3%.

The bands and tables below come from the conversion sheet dated 30 November 2018 that universities circulate as the HEC formula, which we read from the copy hosted by the University of Management and Technology. HEC itself stopped converting CGPAs in 2008, and its semester system guidelines publish a simpler grade table with lower figures, shown further down. Our free CGPA to percentage calculator uses the same formula and also works out your CGPA from semester grades.

What is CGPA?

CGPA is your cumulative grade point average: the average of your grade points across every semester so far, weighted by credit hours. A semester with more credit hours counts for more.

Worked example: semesters of 3.2 (18 credit hours), 3.6 (18) and 3.4 (16) give (3.2 x 18 + 3.6 x 18 + 3.4 x 16) / 52 = 3.40. With the HEC formula, 3.40 is 84.1%.

What is the HEC formula for CGPA to percentage?

The formula changes with your CGPA, so first find your band, then apply its formula. On the 4.0 scale:

CGPA (4.0 scale)Percentage formulaPercentage range
3.63 to 4.00(CGPA – 0.30) / 0.03790 to 100%
3.25 to 3.62(CGPA – 0.29) / 0.03780 to 89%
2.88 to 3.24(CGPA – 0.36) / 0.03670 to 79%
2.50 to 2.87(CGPA – 0.28) / 0.03760 to 69%
1.80 to 2.49(CGPA + 1.65) / 0.06950 to 59%
1.00 to 1.79(CGPA + 2.16) / 0.07940 to 49%
Below 1.00CGPA / 0.0248Below 40%

On the 5.0 scale every band starts one point higher and the numbers inside the formula shift by one: 4.63 to 5.00 is (CGPA – 1.30) / 0.037, 4.25 to 4.62 is (CGPA – 1.29) / 0.037, 3.88 to 4.24 is (CGPA – 1.36) / 0.036, 3.50 to 3.87 is (CGPA – 1.28) / 0.037, 2.80 to 3.49 is (CGPA + 0.65) / 0.069, 2.00 to 2.79 is (CGPA + 1.16) / 0.079, and below 2.00 it is (CGPA – 1) / 0.0248. In practice, a CGPA on the 5.0 scale gives the same percentage as a CGPA one point lower on the 4.0 scale.

On the 5.0 scale the gap with the simple method is much wider, up to 10 points around a CGPA of 3.5, so using the right method matters most here.

What does HEC’s own grading table say?

HEC’s Policy Guidelines for Implementation of Uniform Semester System (2018) recommend this equivalence of CGPA and percentage. Each grade maps to a percentage range, and a student is given the minimum percentage of the range: a CGPA of 3.00, for example, counts as 71%.

GradeCGPA (4.0 scale)Percentage

This table gives lower figures than the 2018 formula: 3.5 is 80% here against 86.8%, and 3.0 is 71% against 73.3%. In a notification of 14 January 2008, HEC also said that universities use different conversion formulas, that it would no longer convert CGPAs into percentages itself, and that CGPA, not a percentage, would be used for semester system graduates applying for faculty posts or M.Phil and Ph.D admission.

Which method should you use?

  • Use your university’s own formula when it is printed on your transcript or on the university website. It takes priority for that degree.
  • Quote your CGPA itself when the form allows it. HEC uses the CGPA, not a percentage, for faculty posts and M.Phil and Ph.D admission.
  • Use HEC’s grade table when a form follows HEC’s semester system guidelines or asks for the minimum percentage for your grade.
  • Use the 2018 formula when you need an exact figure and no method is given. Most online calculators, including ours, use it.
  • Avoid the simple method on official forms. On the 4.0 scale it gives a result up to 2.5 points higher than HEC above a CGPA of about 2.28, and a recruiter who checks will see the difference.

How do you convert percentage to CGPA?

Use the reverse HEC bands. On the 4.0 scale:

PercentageCGPA formula (4.0 scale)
90 to 100%3.63 + (percentage – 90) x 0.037
80 to 89%3.25 + (percentage – 80) x 0.037
70 to 79%2.88 + (percentage – 70) x 0.036
60 to 69%2.50 + (percentage – 60) x 0.037
50 to 59%1.80 + (percentage – 50) x 0.069
40 to 49%1.00 + (percentage – 40) x 0.079
Below 40%percentage x 0.0248

Worked example: 75% is in the 70 to 79 band, so the CGPA is 2.88 + 5 x 0.036 = 3.06. For the 5.0 scale, add 1 to the result.

Common mistakes when converting CGPA

  • Mixing up the scales. A 3.5 on the 5.0 scale is 60.0%, not 86.8%. Check the maximum grade point printed on your transcript.
  • Using a semester GPA. Forms usually ask for the cumulative figure across all semesters.
  • Rounding too early. Keep two decimal places in the CGPA and round only the final percentage.
  • Ignoring the band edges. The formula changes at 3.63, 3.25, 2.88, 2.50, 1.80 and 1.00 on the 4.0 scale, so a CGPA just under an edge uses the band below it.

Summary

To convert CGPA to percentage in Pakistan, find your band in the widely used 2018 HEC formula and apply it: 3.5 is 86.8%, 3.0 is 73.3% and 2.5 is 60.0% on the 4.0 scale. On the 5.0 scale, the same percentages belong to CGPAs one point higher. HEC’s own grade table gives lower minimum figures, such as 71% for 3.0, so check which method your form asks for. Use your university’s own formula when it publishes one, and use our free CGPA to percentage calculator to convert either way in seconds. Writing an abstract or assignment in Urdu?
