Google Ads has no minimum spend: you set an average daily budget, and on Search campaigns you mostly pay when someone clicks. On a busy day Google may spend up to twice your daily budget, but over a month it will not charge more than 30.4 times that budget. The right monthly figure is the one that buys enough clicks to produce the number of leads you need, which you can work out from your cost per click and your conversion rate.
For a local service business in Pakistan that might mean a few thousand rupees a day; in competitive industries it can be much more. This guide explains how Google Ads billing works, gives you a simple formula for your monthly budget with a worked example in PKR, and shows where small businesses often waste money.
How does Google Ads billing work?
- You set the daily budget. Google’s budget rules say that “on a given day, your campaign might spend up to twice your average daily budget”, and that “at the end of the month, you will have spent no more than 30.4 times your average daily budget”.
- The cost per click comes from an auction. What you pay depends on your bid, how many advertisers compete for the same search, and how relevant your ad and landing page are to the search.
- Quality Score has three parts: expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience, which Google describes as “how relevant and useful your landing page is to people who click your ad” (Google Ads Help). Quality Score itself is a diagnostic, not an input in the auction, but improving these three things improves how your ads compete, which usually lowers what you pay per click.
- There is no contract. You can pause, lower or raise the budget whenever you like.
How much should you spend per month? The formula
Work backwards from the leads you want:
- Cost per lead = cost per click divided by your conversion rate (the share of clicks that become an inquiry).
- Monthly budget = the number of leads you want multiplied by the cost per lead.
- Daily budget = the monthly budget divided by 30.4.
Here is the formula with example numbers. The cost per click and conversion rate below are assumptions for illustration; get your own click costs from Google Keyword Planner, which shows bid ranges for your keywords and city.
| Step | Example | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Average cost per click | Assumed | PKR 80 |
| Conversion rate | Assumed: 5 of every 100 clicks send an inquiry | 5% |
| Cost per lead | 80 / 0.05 | PKR 1,600 |
| Leads wanted per month | Your target | 30 |
| Monthly budget | 30 x 1,600 | PKR 48,000 |
| Average daily budget | 48,000 / 30.4 | About PKR 1,580 |

Notice what moves the answer most. Doubling your conversion rate from 5% to 10%, with a better landing page and offer, halves your cost per lead. That is usually cheaper than paying more per click.
What does Google Ads cost per month for different businesses?
The same formula gives very different answers depending on what you sell and where your customers are. The three examples below use assumed click costs and conversion rates, not market averages, and an exchange rate of USD 1 = PKR 280 (rounded, mid-October 2026). Replace every assumption with your own numbers from Keyword Planner and your past inquiries.
| Business | Assumed cost per click | Assumed conversion rate | Cost per lead or sale | Monthly target | Monthly budget | Daily budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dental clinic, ads shown in one city in Pakistan | PKR 60 | 6% | PKR 1,000 | 40 leads | PKR 40,000 | About PKR 1,316 |
| Online store, ads across Pakistan | PKR 25 | 1.5% (orders) | About PKR 1,667 per order | 60 orders | PKR 100,000 | About PKR 3,290 |
| Pakistani software company, ads shown in the UAE | USD 3 (PKR 840) | 3% | PKR 28,000 (USD 100) | 10 leads | PKR 280,000 (USD 1,000) | About PKR 9,210 |
Two lessons stand out. First, ads aimed at the Gulf, the UK or the US are priced by the advertisers competing in those markets, so a Pakistani business selling abroad usually needs a much larger budget than one selling to its own city. Second, a cheap click is not the same as a cheap customer: in these examples the online store pays the least per click but the most per result.
Can you afford the lead? The break-even check
Before you set a budget, work out the most you can pay for one lead and still make money:
Break-even cost per lead = profit from one customer x the share of leads that become customers.
- Clinic (assumed): profit per new patient PKR 12,000, and 1 in 4 leads books. Break-even is 12,000 x 0.25 = PKR 3,000. The example cost per lead of PKR 1,000 leaves room for profit.
- Online store (assumed): average order PKR 4,000 at a 30% margin, so PKR 1,200 profit per order. The example cost per order of about PKR 1,667 loses about PKR 467 on every sale, unless customers buy again. Fix the conversion rate, raise the order value or narrow the products you advertise before you raise the budget.
If your cost per lead is above break-even, a bigger budget only loses money faster.
What is the smallest budget that makes sense?
If your daily budget buys only two or three clicks, it will take months to learn which keywords and ads work. Use the formula to find a budget that can produce at least a handful of leads in the first month, and keep the campaign narrow until it does: one service, one city, a short list of specific keywords, and ads that run only during the hours you can answer calls and WhatsApp messages.
How do you pay for Google Ads from Pakistan?
Most accounts use automatic payments. According to Google Ads Help, you are charged when your costs reach your payment threshold or on the first day of the month, so you can be charged several times a month. The threshold can rise automatically as you spend, and you can opt out of automatic increases in your billing settings.
- Prepaying is not offered everywhere. Google says the prepay setting is only available in certain countries. Check the options shown under Billing, then Settings, in your own account rather than relying on what someone saw in another country.
- Ask your bank before you start. Many Pakistani debit and credit cards need international online payments switched on before Google can charge them, and the bank may add foreign currency charges.
- Budget for tax on top of ad spend. Banks can be required to deduct provincial sales tax on payments for advertising services to foreign platforms; for example, ProPakistani reported that the Sindh Revenue Board told banks to do this from October 2023. Rates and rules change, so confirm the current deduction with your bank or tax adviser.
- You are not charged for invalid clicks. Google says you will not be charged for invalid clicks, and that if it finds invalid activity after you were billed you receive a credit “where appropriate and possible” (Google Ads Help).
Your real monthly cost is therefore ad spend, plus tax and bank charges, plus any management fee and the cost of the landing page the ads send people to.
What should the first 30 days look like?
Use the first month to learn cheaply, not to scale. A simple plan:
- Before launch: set up conversion tracking for forms, calls and WhatsApp taps. In Keyword Planner, note the “top of page bid” low range (about the 20th percentile of what advertisers paid over the last 30 days) and high range (about the 80th percentile) for your keywords and city (Google Ads Help). If your daily budget cannot buy at least 10 clicks at the high range, narrow the keywords or the area.
- Location setting: Google recommends “Presence or interest” as a best practice on Search, but says to choose “Presence” when you only want to reach people physically in your locations (Google Ads Help). A clinic or shop that only serves its own city usually wants Presence.
- Days 1 to 7: check the search terms report every day or two and add irrelevant searches as negative keywords.
- Days 8 to 21: pause keywords that spend without inquiries and move budget to the ones that bring leads. Look at each keyword’s Quality Score (1 to 10) and its three parts to see whether the ad, the keyword or the landing page is the weak point. Google calls Quality Score a diagnostic tool and says it is not an input in the ad auction (Google Ads Help).
- Days 22 to 30: compare your real cost per lead with your break-even figure. Raise the budget only if you are under it.
Where do small businesses waste Google Ads money?
- Broad keywords with no negative keywords, so ads show for jobs, free downloads, courses and other searches that never buy.
- Location targeting that is too wide, or that includes people merely interested in a city rather than in it.
- Sending clicks to the home page instead of a page about the exact service in the ad.
- No conversion tracking, so nobody knows which keywords bring calls, forms or WhatsApp chats.
- Ads running at night when nobody answers, for services people book in office hours.
How do you track leads from Google Ads?
Set up conversion tracking for every way a customer can reach you: form submissions, phone calls from ads and from your site, and taps on your WhatsApp button. In Pakistan, WhatsApp often brings the most inquiries, so do not leave it untracked. If you handle many chats, our guide to the WhatsApp Business API in Pakistan explains how to qualify and record them automatically.
How much does Google Ads management cost?
Managers and agencies usually charge in one of three ways: a fixed monthly fee, a percentage of ad spend, or a setup fee followed by a monthly fee. A percentage model gives the manager a reason to raise your spend; a fixed fee is easier to budget. Whichever you choose, ask exactly what is included: keyword research, ad writing, landing page advice, conversion tracking, weekly optimisation, and a monthly report in leads and cost per lead, not just clicks.
Google Ads or SEO: which should you pay for first?
Google Ads brings visitors from the day it is approved, and Google says most ads are reviewed within one business day, but the traffic stops when you stop paying. SEO and Google Maps take months to build, then keep working without a cost per click. Many local businesses run ads while their organic presence grows. Our guide on how to rank on Google Maps covers the free side.
Summary
Google Ads cost per month is whatever you decide, because there is no minimum: Google can spend up to twice your daily budget on a single day but no more than 30.4 times it in a month. Set the budget from the leads you need, divide it by 30.4 for your daily figure, and spend your effort on Quality Score, landing pages and tracking, which lower the cost of every lead.
